It stands for Small Business Sunday.
#SBS2024 Notebook and pin badge.
SBS started out as an idea 13 years ago. Theo Paphitis would retweet 6 businesses each week on a Sunday night if you applied to enter. Using Theo’s platform to support small businesses. As marketing your own small business can be a lonely job.
This has grown over the last 13 years into a leading small business network with over 4000 members.
To give some stats:
75% of SBS members have a turnover below £100k.
80% of the member are female.
65% of the members grew their business during 2023.
SBS are sponsored by larger businesses, such as Google, SumUp, NatWest, DHL.
SBS supports small businesses by connecting them together. Allowing people to make friends and grow their businesses.
Helen at SBS2024 Birmingham ICC
In February 2024, I travelled to Birmingham’s ICC to attend my first SBS networking event. I got my certificate and had my photograph taken with Theo Paphitis.
It was an amazing day. I met and spoke to the sponsors. I got to listen to the expert speakers. This included other small businesses who are further ahead in their business journeys.
I am grateful for the energy and platform that Theo brings to the SBS and everyone who has supported Country Mouse's journey in getting this far.
It is great to see what other small businesses have achieved by rethinking the norm.
I’ll leave a link to the SBS website for anyone interested in knowing more.
]]>Choosing a wool throw can be a daunting task. There are so many different types of wool throws and blankets on the market and knowing which one is a perfect match for you and your needs can be tricky and often trial and error. To help you make a decision I have put together this guide to help you choose the perfect wool throw for your needs.
All wool is natural, biodegradable, insulating and breathable. The softness and thickness of a wool blanket or wool throw depends upon the wool used to make the product.
There are also a few key phrases and terms that people use when describing wool throws and blankets and they are lambswool and pure new wool. Put simply, lambswool is wool shorn from sheep under the age of a year. It is the wool from the first sheering. This wool is soft, and silky with a fine finish. Lambswool is regarded as a high-grade textile.
Pure new wool is a term used to describe wool that is shorn from a sheep after its first sheering. It is its second and subsequent sheering. Pure new wool is graded to make sure that no other fibres such as recycled wool has been added. Pure new wool refers to the quality of the wool. This wool can be mixed with many breeds of sheep. It is soft, but not as soft as lambswool.
Swedish Wool
Swedish wool originates from farms in Southern Sweden. The wool is completely natural and without any chemical additives. This wool is versatile and Swedish wool throws are perfect as a throw for the bed, a chair, sofas or around the home. Our Swedish wool throws are Swedish lambswool. These throws are thick, fluffy, warm and versatile. They are available in a wide range of colours and patterns.
Our Swedish wool throws are made from lambswool by Klippan. These throws are thick, fluffy and soft. They are also incredibly versatile.
Recycled Wool
Country Mouse recycled wool throws fall into three categories. Our random recycled wool throws, Swedish recycled and merino recycled wool throws
Recycled wool is made from discarded and leftover wool from the production of our other wool throws. The recycled wool is used and collected from our own production. It can be anything from wool fibers from the carding machine to wool yarn from the looms.
Our random recycled wool throws are slightly coarser than our other wool throws, however they are really versatile. They retain all the benefits of wool but cost less than our other wool throws. We have no control over the colours of our random wool throws. These recycled throws are really versatile, use them in your home, garden or use them as a picnic blanket.
Our Swedish recycled wool throws are woven using recycled Swedish wool and Swedish lambswool. When the recycled wool is shredded before weaving, the fibres are quite short. Blending them with new wool, creates a softer wool throw. These Swedish recycled wool throws are popular and are available in a wide range of colours and patterns. These throws are thick, soft and cosy.
The third recycled wool throw that Country Mouse stocks, is the recycled merino wool throw in a classic herringbone pattern. These throws are made from 100 merino wool but 50% is recycled merino and the other 50% is merino lambswool. These throws are soft and slightly thicker than our Scottish merino throws. However, they are lighter weight than our Swedish wool throws.
Country Mouse recycled wool throws are available in three different types of wool. Random recycled which is slightly coarse. Swedish which is softer, fluffy and thick and merino which is soft and lightweight. All of our recycled wool throws retain all the benefits of wool but with added eco-friendly credentials.
Merino wool
Merino wool is wool which is from the merino sheep. The merino sheep is an amazing breed which is bred specifically for its wool. The merino wool used to make our throws and blankets is sourced from merino sheep in New Zealand and South Africa.
Merino wool is renowned for its exceptional qualities, which include fibres that are incredibly soft, and fine and have air pockets to trap air. This helps to keep you warm and cosy.
As a wool and natural fibre, it is durable, breathable, and insulating. Combine this with the exceptional softness and you are well on your way to the best fibre there is. Merino wool throws are lightweight, drapey and soft. Perfect for those who don’t like a thick heavy blanket. Merino is thinner than other blankets, but thanks to its amazing properties it's also very warm. Pure merino wool, like Cashmere, can be worn next to the skin. Merino wool is often used in sports clothing as a technical base layer due to its fantastic properties.
Merino lambswool is one of the best wool throws that you can have. These are soft and cosy. Merino wool sheep are capable of producing this incredible fibre which is used for clothing, bedding soft furnishings, socks and wool blankets.
Merino wool throws are soft, fine and lightweight. Perfect for draping over a chair or sofa. merino is also really warm.
Gotland wool
Gotland wool comes from the Gotland sheep. This is an ancient breed that has existed since the Viking age. Gotland sheep are originally from the Swedish islands of Gotland. This wool is luxurious, full of lustre, silky and shiny. Our Gotland wool throws are quite thick and versatile.
Gotland wool throws are silky, soft, fluffy and lightweight.
As you can see, each wool has its own characteristics and qualities and at Country Mouse, we love them all. Ready to buy your perfect wool throw?
]]>Have you ever walked into a room and just felt happy? That feeling can be attributed to the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter in the brain associated with pleasure and reward.
Dopamine is released when we do things that make us happy, and we can also trigger the release of dopamine by manipulating our environment. This is where dopamine decor comes in.
Dopamine decor is about letting go of expectations of how a room, space or your home “should” look and instead, embracing whatever makes you feel happy. Creating a space that promotes feelings of happiness, relaxation, and comfort. It’s about designing a space that makes you feel good. Boosting that serotonin level to evoke happiness.
Dopamine decor is all about letting go of how you or others think a room should look and embracing what makes you feel happy.
Here’s how you can use dopamine decor in your home:
Pastel shades can help create a calm environment, whereas oranges and yellows are more exciting and uplifting.
Incorporating dopamine decor into your home is all about creating a space that promotes happiness, relaxation, and comfort. By adding plants, using calming colours, creating a cosy atmosphere, displaying meaningful items, and letting go of the idea of a perfect show home. Embrace your fun side. If you're not wanting to do a room, a shelf is a good way to use dopamine décor in a small way. You can even use dopamine décor by adding a house plant to your desk with some bright funky pens and a cosy throw or cushion.
You can create a space that makes you feel good. Designing your space to promote the release of dopamine can have a positive impact on your overall well-being, leading to a happier and healthier life.

Wool is an amazing and unbeatable natural fibre. The secret behind wool is its natural breathability and warmth. This can be found in wool fibres.
Wool fibres are crimped, and when woven into a wool throw or blanket, these crimped fibres create tiny air pockets. These pockets trap air, which the body warms up, creating a natural, insulated barrier against the cold. It's a bit like having a personal, portable heater.
As wool breathes, thanks to it being a superior natural fibre, this way, you don’t become too hot or uncomfortable. The wool fibres, literally breathe with your body temperature. Helping to keep you at the perfect temperature.
Why Woven Wool is amazing.
How traditional wool blankets are woven also plays a crucial role in their warmth. When weaving a wool throw the overlapping yarns help to trap even more warm air, enhancing the insulation. Whether you choose a Klippan throw, herringbone, eco, recycled, merino or any pattern our wool throws not only keep you toasty but also allow your skin to breathe, preventing overheating – a perfect balance for comfortable, cosy evenings.
Staying Warm in Bed with Wool
For those chilly nights, there's nothing quite like snuggling up in bed with a wool throw. Layering a wool throw or two on top of your duvet can add a significant amount of warmth, without the heaviness. Wool's natural ability to regulate temperature means you stay comfortably warm throughout the night, without the risk of overheating.
Wool blankets will help you sleep soundly in bed, keeping you at the perfect temperature all night long.

Wool Blankets vs Synthetic
While synthetic fibres might mimic the feel of wool, they don't quite match up in performance and comfort. Natural wool is superior in its temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking properties, helping you stay perfectly warm without that uncomfortable clammy feeling you might experience with blankets made from acrylic and polyester. Plus, while synthetic throws are made from plastic, wool is a natural sustainable and biodegradable product making wool blankets a choice you can feel good about – both for your home and the planet. If you want an eco-friendly wool throw, check out Country Mouse's eco wool throws.

]]>Having cold feet is one of the most unpleasant experiences. Having cold wet feet is even worse. Finding a good pair of warm socks is akin to searching for a matching pair of socks that has been forever lost somewhere between the washing machine and the black hole of the legendary sock drawer.
So what makes for a good pair of warm socks? One of the main features of warm socks has to be a high percentage of natural fibre. What I really mean is that your socks need to be made from high quality wool.
I suffer with cold feet all year round so I am really well versed in that search for warm socks. I will happily share my tips so that you too can find a solution to having warm happy feet.
What is high quality wool?
By high quality wool – I mean something like merino lambswool. The merino sheep produce the softest wool and lambswool is the first shearing of the sheep, which ultimately produced a lovely soft yarn, so none of that itchy feeling.
But aren’t wool socks itchy?
If you have a good quality pair of socks made with merino lambswool, then generally you won’t find them itchy. There are some people who do find all types of wool itchy and in these cases, generally what they find is that they are allergic to the lanolin in the wool. In these cases, this is when I would recommend a pair of alpaca socks, as alpaca wool does not contain lanolin.
How do you look after your wool socks?
When it comes to washing natural fibres, it’s basically the heat or temperature of the water that is going to cause the wool to shrink and felt. So I always wash my socks on the coolest setting, such as 20 degrees, although you can go as high as a 30 degree C wash. The thing is, how much do you trust your washing machine? I can promise you that on my 10 year old washing machine that was fit for the scrap heap, I did lose a few woollies and would end up hand washing them. When that machine finally gave up and I bought a newer machine, probably with a good thermostat, the problems diminished.
How often do you need to wash your wool socks?
Another good question – where everyone is very conditioned to washing garments after one wear, simply because they have high content of man-made materials in them the bacteria and smells quickly build up. With a good quality pair of wool socks, because of the natural fibres, you’ll find that they absorb sweat and smells and you don’t have to wash them as frequently as maybe a synthetic pair. So while yes you do need to be a bit more careful when you do wash them, they need washing less frequently. Often a swill out in a basin tepid water is sufficient to freshen them up.
What are your favourite patterns and colours?
Pulling on a pair of new socks is such a joy and so it should be. What’s even more heart warming is finding a pair of socks that actually make you happy and put a spring, bounce or even a daring leap in your step as you start your day? I challenge you to do this with a dull pair of black socks. So it just remains for you to decide whether you want knee high wool socks or calf length socks.
Please leave a comment below about your favourite pattern of wool socks and colours. Do you prefer geometric shapes or animal patterns? Do you prefer pastels or dark colours.

As a raynauds sufferer I'm always on the lookout for ways to keep warm when I'm out and about. I found one of the best ways to keep warm, was to wear clothes with a high content of natural fibres, such as wool in them.
So it comes as no surprise that I have also built up a large collection of luxury wool socks and alpaca socks as a part of my business.
I wanted the collection to be bright and cheerful as well as warm and cosy.
Our range of luxury wool socks are both colourful and fun to brighten up your day and keep your feet warm. The wool socks are made from 80% Italian spun lambswool, so they are soft, hard wearing and warm. The warmth comes from the high percentage of lambswool. Needless to say - I live in these socks all year round.
The alpaca socks are made from 55% alpaca wool. Alpaca wool has a downing effect, so traps air, also keeping your feet warm. My husband seems to have gained many pairs of alpaca socks, from the everyday alpaca sock range - and he says he loves the soft feel of the fibres, in addition to the gentle warmth they provide. Whilst we're on the subject of alpaca socks - we also have a selection of alpaca bed socks which have 90% alpaca wool in them, providing that ultimate luxury when you get out of the bath in the evening and curl up on the sofa. You can also wear them in bed!

A merino wool wool blanket is not only perfect for those cosy moments at home but beautiful too
Using a green wool blanket in your home
Shades of green make a fresh impact, especially when you set them against neutral shades like white or warm neutrals. Don’t be afraid to mix textures and prints together either. We love when rooms embrace the richness of green and all the shades it offers, so don’t hold back if you want to use green across the board. Green blends well with other greens. It is the colour of nature and there’s nothing nicer than walking in the woods and surrounding yourself in a green wonderland. Your rooms can be like that too if you so desire.
As well as green paint on the walls, we’re talking green tiles, wallpaper, green worktops, green upholstery, curtains and more. Mix different elements together to make an elegant statement. I have used green in my bedroom, lounge and bathroom. I find it so relaxing, and I am loving dramatic dark green as well as sage greens. I love adding a pink or orange as well.
Green wool blankets as an accent
One of the easiest ways to add green accents into your home is with a wool blanket. A green wool blanket can easily be left on the back of a chair or sofa and can also be used as an extra layer on the bed. Plants are another easy way to introduce green. I have quite a few house plants in my office and other rooms in my home.
Introducing green wool blankets or in fact any colour wool blanket should be easy. Try not to overthink it. Green is a reasonably easy colour will always be on trend. Plus, greens are easy to blend with other greens and other colours. Take inspiration from nature. Green is natures natural foil.

Wool blankets are ideal for staying warm this winter. Wool is an amazing natural fibre, with outstanding insulating properties.
Merino lambswool is soft, lightweight and will keep you warm and cosy this winter.
I am often asked, are wool blankets warm? The simple answer is yes, they are. A wool blanket will keep you warm and cosy and help to keep you at just the right temperature as they breathe and allow heat out as well.
Wool fibres have natural bends and a crimp which trap air and help to keep you warm. These pockets of air that are trapped in the wool fibres, circulate heat, allowing more of that heat to move towards your body. If you get too warm, the wool allows the heat out, thanks to its being highly breathable.
The other question I am often asked is, which is the warmest wool blanket you have? As a stockist of merino, Swedish lambswool recycled wool blankets, they will all keep you warm and toasty.
Merino wool blankets are the softest most gentle against your skin. You can be reassured that wool will keep you warm and toasty. Synthetics such as fleece will not. Although it’s a natural fibre, cotton is not as warm as wool.

]]>One of my most frequently asked questions is how I clean or wash my wool blanket. Before you reach for the washing machine, please read this helpful guide.
Wool is among one of the most amazing and durable natural fibres. Not only are they soft and warm they are difficult to stain and damage unlike manmade fibres.
Many people often believe that wool is hard to look after and keep clean. However, wool blankets are easy to care for, and you don't need to wash them often, in fact, it's best to wash them as sparingly as possible. This often comes as a surprise to people, and I often met with a look of horror. As consumers, we are conditioned to wash our clothes after each wear. Manmade clothing absorbs moisture, and this traps bacteria which then causes odour. Of course, you’re going to wash it. Wool and other natural fibres are different. They actually breathe and repel dirt and odour.
To ensure your wool blanket lasts a lifetime here are some of our top tips for caring for your wool blanket.
Air blankets outside
We find wool doesn’t need washing as often as man-made materials. A good shake and hanging on the line outside on a dry day can really refresh your blanket. This also dissipates any odour.
Remove Debris
Like all fabrics in the home, debris - like crumbs and pet hair - sometimes get stuck in wool. A lint roller or soft-bristle brush can gently remove debris from your blanket. This is best done gently in the direction of the wool to avoid pulling and snagging the wool.
Clean a stain
Wool is naturally water repellent so liquid stains don't happen very often, however, if left they will begin to soak in. The longer stains or spills remain on the fabric the more difficult they become to remove as they will dry into the fabric. So, if you spill on a blanket shake off the liquid as soon as possible. If unfortunately, there is a stain use warm water and a mild detergent suitable for wool to spot clean as soon as possible. Soak the stain and don’t scrub the fabric, instead blot with a soft cloth.
Wash
If your blanket needs a wash, make sure you follow the instructions on the care label. Different wools will need caring for differently. If the label allows for machine washing, make sure this is on a gently wool wash cycle and use a gentle wool detergent. Wash wool on a Cold Wash Only, as heat can shrink the blanket. Do not spin! Spinning the blanket can also create shrinkage. Never put a wool blanket on a dryer setting. Never use fabric conditioner, You will ruin the wool fibres.
Dry
Never use a tumble dryer to dry a wool blanket, it will destroy the softness of your blanket and shrink it. It is best to hang them flat on a clothesline either inside or outside. Avoid places too near a radiator or other heat source.
We hope this helps you care for your wool blanket. Please remember this is a guideline only and we cannot accept responsibility for any damage caused to your blanket by use of these guidelines. If in doubt, seek the advice of a professional cleaning company.

Introducting our Scottish merino wool blanket collection
Country Mouse is excited to announce the launch of our new blanket collection, Scottish Merino Wool Blankets just in time for winter when they will really come into their own.
Country Mouse’s wool blankets are all woven in historic and traditional mills and this mill is no exception. For our new merino blanket collection, we have partnered with a Scottish mill that is based in the highlands of Scotland and has been creating fabrics since 1783.
Our Scottish merino wool blankets is a collection that will continue to grow and evolve. Each blanket has been chosen based upon its colours, patterns and of course, for being a merino wool blanket. The colours and patterns are beautiful and contemporary and will look perfect in any room of your home.
The Mill
The mill has a rich history dating back over 200 years. Situated in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, the location is stunningly beautiful, surrounded by mountains, forests, and rivers. The mill has been in operation since 1783, weaving some of the finest wool fabrics in the world.
The team has an incredible passion for quality, and every stage of the production process is carried out with the utmost care. They select only the best materials, use traditional weaving techniques, and finish each piece by hand. These qualities transfer through to the finished wool blanket.
Merino wool blankets were the first wool blankets that I stocked when I started selling blankets back in 2015. I adore a wool blanket woven from Gotland wool, Swedish wool in fact any wool. However, I do have a soft spot for merino wool blankets. They are so soft against the skin, for their weight, they are incredibly soft. I will always stock merino wool blankets. For those who can find other wools scratchy or coarse, merino wool is the go-to blanket. The fibres are finer than hair and bend against your skin. That is why merino wool blankets are so soft. Merino is expensive but is a luxury fibre and an investment that will last for years and keep you warm. Merino wool blankets really are the warmest, softest and lightest weight blankets.
Merino wool blankets are lightweight. Perfect as an extra layer on the bed, especially during spring and autumn.
You can buy a Scottish merino wool blaket from Country Mouse. Our collection of merino wool blankets will continue to grow. if you want a slightly thicker merino wool blanket, our Swedish merino blankets are also available on our website.

Autumn is the season where we are invited embrace slow living. For me, autumn brings back memories of picking up shiny conkers, kicking through crunchy piles of leaves, eating blackberry and apple crumble and snuggling up near the fire with a wool blanket. Autumn gives us the chance to notice the change in the seasons. Spring easily slips into summer, but the change from summer to autumn is, for me, quite dramatic. The colours changing on the trees, the cool air, damp mornings and the first frosts. The light is different as well. Often softer and those murky misty days become more frequent as we slide into winter.

Choosing a wool blanket or throw for your home can be a daunting task. There are so many blankets on the market and we are often guided by colour, price and ease of washing. We are so used to putting everything in the washing machihne and tumble drier it has become second nature. This has led to the leaking of microplastics and pollutants in the water and subsequent damage to the environment. Most marine life has microplastics in them and there has been resrach which suggests that humans also have plastic in their bodies from contaminated food and drink from microplastics.
Therefore, when it comes to choosing blankets or throws for your home, it can be tempting to choose synthetic materials like a fleece blanket made from polyester or nylon. After all, synthetic fabrics are often cheaper and easier to care for than natural materials like cotton or wool. However, synthetic textiles come with quite a lot of downsides, from their contribution to plastic pollution to their lack of breathability and durability. In contrast, natural textiles are often much more comfortable to use, last longer and have less negative impact on the environment. I am often asked how to wash wool blankets and I have even been asked if they need to be bleached clean. We as a nation, are so used to man made fibres that we often get thrown we we are first introduced to the beauty of natural fibres.
Let's compare synthetic fabrics with natural fabrics, and see why wool is one of the most sustainable choices when choosing the best blanket or throw for your home.
Choose wool blankets rather than synthetic blankets by understanding the downsides of man made throws
What are synthetic fabrics made from?
Synthetic fabrics are man-made materials that are produced using chemicals and petroleum products. Thats oil. This includes polyester, nylon, and acrylic. Synthetic fabrics have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their affordability and versatility. However, synthetic fabrics also come with a range of negative impacts, particularly on the environment.
Why are synthetic fabrics bad for the environment?
One of the biggest issues with synthetic fabrics is their environmental impact. Synthetic fabrics are made using petroleum, which is a non-renewable resource that takes millions of years to form. The production of synthetic fabrics also requires a lot of energy, and releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Additionally, synthetic fabrics shed microplastics when they are washed, which can end up in our waterways and harm marine life. Microplastics sadly, can be found in nearly all marine life and if we eat fish, we ingest microplastics, Synthetics are literally poisoning us and the planet.
Synthetic fabrics also have poor breathability which can make them sweaty and uncomfortable in hot weather. Imagine, wearing a plastic bag! Synthetics, don’t breathe with you and allow air flow, and they also trap moisture which will make you and the syntetic blanket smell. This means they need to be washed frequently and they often look tatty very quickly and end up in landfill. A man made blanket can take laundered and replaced more often than natural fabrics. A nylon blanket can take 40 - 50 years to decompose and and polyester over 500 years. Plus, the chemicals will leach into the land causing yet more damage.
Synthetic fabrics like polyester, nylon and acrylic are made from petrochemicals. When they're washed, microplastics are released into the water and can be ingested by fish in our oceans and waterways. This in turn can enter the human food chain
How eco-friendly are fabrics made from recycled plastic bottles?
I have often been asked to stock blankets made from recycled plastic bottles, however, I am always wary of micro plastics leaching during washing..
On the surface, turning discarded plastic bottles into fabric might appear to be an environmentally friendly choice, but it's not quite as simple as that. Using recycled plastic bottles as a raw material for fabric production can indeed help reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills or oceans. Secondly, producing fabric from recycled plastic bottles requires less energy and resources compared to producing synthetic polyester, acrylic or nylon from virgin petrochemicals.
However, recycling PET plastic bottles into textiles is not as sustainable as might seem. That’s because plastic bottles can already be recycled into other plastic bottles up to eight times without loss of quality. Diverting them from this process and making them into fabric misses the opportunity to recycle them in a closed loop system. Additionally, fabrics made from recycled plastic bottles shed even more microplastics during washing as the fibres are shorter, increasing water pollution.
Wool is an increadibly sustainable material . Sheep grow a thick new fleece every year, making wool the ultimate renewable fibre
What are natural fabrics?
Natural fabrics are materials that are made from plant or animal fibres. Common examples include cotton, linen, hemp, alpaca and wool blankets made from wool have been used for thousands of years and offer a range of benefits over synthetic alternatives.
Why are natural fabrics more eco-friendly than synthetic fabrics?
One of the biggest benefits of natural fabrics is their sustainability. Natural fabrics are made from renewable resources that can be grown and harvested without depleting the earth's resources. Additionally, natural fabrics have a smaller carbon footprint than synthetic fabrics, since they require less energy to produce.
Natural fabrics are also more breathable and moisture-wicking than synthetic fabrics, which makes them more comfortable to use in a range of weather conditions. Wool blankets will keep you warm without becoming sweaty, so they're perfect for helping you stay just the right temperature when snuggling up at home.
When it does come to the end of their useful life, natural fabrics can be recycled. If they do end up in landfill they're biodegradable, unlike synthetic fabrics which never decompose. Wool can biodegrade in as little as 4 months under the right conditions and releases beneficial nutrients into the soil as it does so.
Why wool blankets are a sustainable choice
Wool is a unique natural fabric that offers a range of benefits for both its users and the environment. Wool is produced from the fleece of sheep and is a renewable resource that's naturally grown and sheared each year. Additionally, wool has a lower impact on the environment than synthetic fabric production, since it requires less energy and produces less waste to produce. Sheep farming provides valuable stewardship in remote upland landscapes, where tender crops or livestock wouldn't thrive.
Wool also offers a range of unique properties that make it a great choice for clothing and home décor. Wool is naturally flame-resistant, meaning that it does not need to be treated with harmful chemicals to meet fire safety standards.
Wool is naturally resistant to odours and stains, meaning that it requires less washing than other fabrics. Wool fibres that are shed during washing pose no harm to marine life, unlike the microplastics that make their way into rivers and oceans when synthetic fabrics are washed. On the downside, you need to be more careful when washing wool to avoid them shrinking but you can wash them less often.
If a natural home environment is important to you, wool blankets are the best choice. They won't shed plastic microfibres into the atmosphere in your home so you can breathe and sleep easy.
Synthetic fabrics vs natural fabrics: which is best?
When it comes to choosing the best blanket or throw for your home, it's important to consider both the benefits and drawbacks of different materials. While synthetic fabrics may seem like a cheap and convenient choice, they come with a range of negative impacts for both consumers and the environment. Natural blankets like wool offer a more sustainable and durable alternative, with a range of unique properties that make them a great choice for clothing, bedding, and home décor.
By choosing 100% pure wool woven blankets, you can enjoy all the benefits of natural fabrics while supporting a more sustainable and ethical industry. Country Mouse makes all its blankets from 100% pure wool, plus they're all woven in the UK and Europe.
Country Mouse also has a range of recycled wool blankets which are made fromthe off cuts and remnants from the manufacture of our other wool blankets.

Country Mouse green wool blankets are available in a wide range of colours and patterns.
Green is an incredibly versatile colour and can blend with warm and cool hues. I love putting green and pink together, or green and mustard. It does depend on the shade of green. Sages work well with grey. Emerald green works well with warm mustard tones or navy. Colour, of course, is down to personal choice. The phrase red and green should never be seen. Well, red sits opposite green and can be regarded as complimentary. Use pinks, burnt orange and yellows instead for a warm cheerful and uplifting feel.
A green wool blanket, I think, is the perfect way to add colour and texture to your home. I find that sage greens work well in my home. However, there is something comforting about a dark green wool blanket. It’s the depth of colour that is perfect for snuggling under on chilly winters evenings.
Mint and pastel shades can add a light fun feel to a room and they blend really well with other pastel shades.

Not everyone likes strong warm colours, I must confess that I love soft muted pinks, sages and blues. However, I know that they are not for everyone, Life would be very dull if we all liked the same colours.
Blue is a lovely colour which can range from rich navy and denim colours through to lighter and softer tones such as duck egg, Smokey blue and jade wool throws. Jade is a sea green wool blanket which could also be classed as green, but I feel that it’s a perfect sea colour and would look perfect in a coastal home.
Blue wool blankets are naturally, suited to coastal homes or homes with a longing for the coast. Dreamy soft blues sit well here along with sea green tones such as our jade wool blanket. Duck egg is another wool blanket that’s right at home in a coastal home. To complete a coastal look add warm neutrals. Darker blues naturally work well for a nautical look, especially when combined with whites, reds, and clean lines.

I think our duck egg wool blanket is more blue than green.

]]>Recycled wool blankets are the perfect balance of sustainable comfort with all the benefts of wool.
We are all becoming increasingly aware of the need to live a much more sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle. This is why recycled wool blankets have become an increacingly popular choice at Country Mouse. These recycled wool blankets are made from excess woollen material and yarn left over from the production of other wool blankets, creating an eco-friendly British wool blanket which is totally unique. Our recycled wool blankets are not only beautiful and unique, they also have a wide range of benefits.
Recycled wool blankets are increadibly versatile. Enjoy using them in the home and the garden.
Our recycled wool blankets retain all the benefits of our other wool blankets but have the added bonus of being recycled, from wool that would have otherwise gone to waste. They still provide warmth, breathability and are perfect for sustainable living. With their ability to provide warmth and comfort, recycled wool blankets are rapidly becoming a staple in sustainable living.
Sustainable living is crucial in our efforts to ensure that our planet will continue to thrive for generations to come. It involves a conscious effort to reduce our carbon footprint and minimize waste, while still enjoying the luxuries of modern living.
Recycled wool blankets are a perfect example of sustainable living. They are manufactured from excess yarn and wool left over from the manufacture of other wool blankets, which otherwise would have gone to waste. By buying products made from recycled materials we are creating demand, using recycled fibres and helping to reduce waste. According to a report in The Circular The United Kingdom produces 206.456 tonnes of textile waste in a year.Out of the 3.1kg of textile waste each Briton produces every year, only 0.3kg are recycled and 0.4 kg are reused. However, 0.8kg are incinerated yearly per person and 1.7kg are disposed of in landfills. I find that astounding. I urge you to create demand for recycled products.
This sustainable approach to manufacturing recycled wool blankets means that fewer resources, such as water and energy, are used in the production process. The result is a more environmentally friendly product that does not leave a significant carbon footprint. Lovely view across the Hope Valley. Well worth the climb to the top
Whether you call it a staycation or a holiday – for the last week in June, my husband and I booked a lovely cottage in the Hope Valley, Peak District National Park.
Hope Valley is about 30 minutes West of Sheffield and about a 45 minute drive East of Manchester. Or if you live in Wiltshire like me, then it’s about a 4 hour drive North.
Hope Valley gives access to some fabulous walking such as the Pennine Way, Kinder Scout and Mam Tor for fabulous views. The area is also very popular for climbers, with great climbing and easy access to areas such as Stannage Edge.
We found a cottage in the village of Bradwell to stay in for the week. It was incredibly peaceful, had lots of character with everything you could need for a week’s holiday.
Our week flew by – and we alternated walking days, with days out to nearby National Trust properties. The plan was to use the cottage as a base to explore the region a little bit further, having had 2 previous holidays in the Hope Valley.
Hardwick Hall was great to explore, especially those who love Tudor History.
Our first National Trust property, was a short drive back towards Sheffield to visit Hardwick Hall. We are both members of the National Trust – so during a week’s holiday we usually look to get the most out of our annual membership. Harwick Hall is described as “English interpretation of Italian Renaissance Architecture” and has a lovely house to explore, gardens and café where I was able to get a tasty gluten free salad.
Tuesday was a walking day. Well, I say a walking day, but we were on holiday as well (remember). So the theme of the walk centred around Grindleford Café. A fabulous independent café set in an old train station waiting room, serving tea and bacon sandwiches, as well as plates of chips. It is cash only, so if you do visit, remember to take some cash.
My husband had set his heart of a bacon butty, so we parked the car a not too challenging few miles up the road at Longshaw Estate (another National Trust carpark) and followed a route to Grindleford Café down via Padley Gorge.
Padley Gorge is a lovely varied walk with the added bonus of a cafe.
I settled for a plateful of chips (order the small portion) while my husband tucked into his bacon bap. We then had the uphill walk for the return to the car – but there are so many walks and routes around the Padley Gorge that you never need to retrace your steps.
Longshaw Estate can be combined with walks around Padley Gorge, owned by the National Trust so you are guaranteed a tea shop!
Grindleford Station – is still an open train station, so you can even incorporate the train into your walks if you fancy a longer walk along the Hope Valley.
Our next outing was to Bakewell, in search of two things. One was a gift for the pet sitter at home, and the other was to find our favourite shop serving Bakewell Tarts – or Bakewell Puddings as we ended up buying. There are many shops in Bakewell claiming to be the original Bakewell Pudding shop, so I will leave you to find your favourite.
Monsal Trail Tunnel. I have to admit these tunnels do scare me.
We took our Bakewell Puddings up to Monsal Head, which is a disused viaduct and fabulous viewpoint to eat our puddings from. The Monsal Trail, is a 8.5 mile long disused railway line starting in Bakewell, and is now a trail, so an absolutely fabulous area to explore on foot or bike. We squeezed in a 6 mile hike to burn off our puddings in the afternoon.
Lyme National Trust.
Feeling the need for an easier day, the following day, we headed to another National Trust property. This time we visited Lyme National Trust. We spent the whole day there exploring the house, a 17 acre garden and some of the estate walks. It’s a personal choice, but between Hardwick Hall and Lyme, Lyme was my favourite and really did capture me all day.
Mam Tor - 360 degree views.
For our final day in the Hope Valley we really couldn’t resist returning to Mam Tor. It has easy access and parking – and fabulous views across to Kinder Scout and down the valley.
I absolutely loved my week in the Hope Valley. There is so much to do, in the way of outdoor activities as well as the caverns to explore on a rainy day. I can’t wait to go back and explore some more.
]]>Checked throws are incredibly versatile and can be used in a variety of settings. Whether you want to create a cosy reading nook in your living room or add a pop of colour to your outdoor seating area, a throw is the perfect accessory. Here are a few ways to incorporate checked throws in your home:
The living room is often the centre of activity in most homes and is usually the first space you see when you enter. Therefore, it's always nice to create a cosy and inviting atmosphere. A checked throw can help you achieve this by adding texture, colour, and warmth to your home décor. You can drape a wool throw over the back of your sofa or armchair and pair it with coordinating curtains or cushions to create a timeless look.
Another way to use a checked wool throw in your living room is by placing it over a coffee table. This adds a pop of colour and texture to your space while also serving as a functional piece. You can use it to store your favourite books or magazines, or even as a makeshift tray for snacks and drinks.
Your bedroom should be a sanctuary, a place where you can relax and unwind. However, creating a cosy peaceful atmosphere without sacrificing style can sometimes be challenging. A checked throw can add a touch of colour and warmth to your bed while also giving it a finished look. You can drape it over the end of your bed or fold it neatly at the foot to create a layered effect.
In addition to using a checked throw on your bed, you can also use it as a decorative accent on a chair or bench in your bedroom.
Checked throws are perfect for outdoor events. Its always a nice to touch to leave a folded wool throw over the back of your guest’s chair. That way, when the temperature drops, the wool throw is conveniently ready to wrap around their shoulders or over the lap. Leaving you and your guests to enjoy the evening.
Overall, the versatility of checked throws makes them a must-have accessory for any home. Whether you're looking to add warmth and texture to your living room or create a cosy atmosphere in your bedroom, a checked throw is the perfect solution. So why not add one to your home décor today?
The material you choose for your throw will depend on its intended use. Consider the climate where you live and the level of warmth you need from your throw. Here are a few popular options:
Cotton is a popular choice for throws because it's lightweight and breathable. It's perfect for warmer climates where you need a thinner layer of warmth. Additionally, cotton throws are easy to care for and can be machine washed.
One of the great things about cotton is that it's a natural fibre. This means that it's biodegradable and won't contribute to environmental waste. Additionally, cotton is hypoallergenic, making it a great choice for those with sensitive skin or allergies.
Cotton throws come in a variety of colours and patterns, so you're sure to find one that matches your decor. They're also versatile and can be used as a decorative accent in any room of your home.
Wool is a great option for colder climates as it provides extra warmth. Additionally, wool throws are durable and can last for years without showing signs of wear and tear.
Wool is a natural insulator, meaning it traps heat and keeps you warm. It's also flame-resistant, making it a safe choice for use around fireplaces or heaters.
One thing to keep in mind when choosing a wool throw is that it may shed initially. This is normal and will subside over time with use.
When choosing a checked throw, consider the style of your home and the mood you want to create. Whether you choose a classic buffalo check or a modern houndstooth check, a checked throw is a great way to add warmth and style to any space.
Once you've chosen your checked throw, it's time to style it in your space. Here are a few tips:
The way you drape your throw can make a significant impact on the overall style of your space. For example, you can drape it over the back of a couch or armchair for a casual look or fold it neatly and place it at the foot of your bed for a more formal look.
If you're going for a more relaxed and laid-back vibe, try draping your throw over a ladder or a wooden crate. This will give your space a rustic and cosy feel. Alternatively, you can drape your throw over a rocking chair or a chaise lounge to create a comfortable and inviting seating area.
When using a checked throw, it's essential to pair it with complementary colours and patterns. For example, you can pair a checked wool throw with a solid coloured accent cushion or a gingham check throw with a floral patterned cushion. Mixing and matching complementary patterns and colours can create a cohesive and polished look.
If you're feeling adventurous, try pairing your checked throw with a bold and bright coloured accent cushion. This will add a pop of colour to your space and create a fun and playful atmosphere. Alternatively, you can pair your throw with a neutral coloured accent cushion for a more subtle and understated look.
Cushions are the perfect complement to a checked throw. You can use them to bring in additional colours and patterns while also adding extra comfort and cosiness to your space. Be sure to choose cushions that coordinate with your throw and overall décor style.
If you want to create a cosy and inviting atmosphere, try adding a few oversized cushions into your décor. These will not only add comfort to your space but also create a warm and welcoming feel.
For a more eclectic look, mix and match different sized and shaped throw pillows. This will add visual interest to your space and create a unique and personalized look.
So, there you have it! With these tips, you can style your checked throw in a variety of ways to create a cosy and inviting atmosphere in your home. Whether you're going for a rustic, laid-back vibe or a polished and sophisticated look, a checked throw is the perfect addition to any décor style.

If you want to create a calming and soothing atmosphere, choose a soft muted pink like dusty rose or pastel. These shades of pink are perfect for creating a relaxing ambiance in your bedroom or living room. On the other hand, if you want to add energy and excitement, go for a bolder pink hue like fuchsia cerise. These hot shades of pink are perfect for adding a pop of colour and vibrancy to a neutral space or for creating a fun and playful vibe in a child’s room.

]]>Gardens can be the perfect oasis to escape busy city life. They offer a place to relax, unwind, and connect with the natural world. If you're looking to create your garden oasis, this step-by-step guide will walk you through the process from start to finish. From planning to planting, we'll cover everything you need to know to transform your outdoor space into a tranquil haven.
Creating a garden oasis is a wonderful way to add beauty and tranquillity to your outdoor space. Before you begin, take some time to determine your goals and vision. What do you hope to achieve with your garden? Are you looking to create a peaceful retreat, a space for entertaining, or a place to grow your own fruits and vegetables?
Consider the style and atmosphere you want to create. Do you prefer a formal or informal garden? Do you want to incorporate water features, such as a fountain or pond? Would you like to include seating areas or outdoor lighting?
Once you have a clear idea of your goals and vision, write them down. This will help guide your decisions as you move through the planning process.
Choosing the right location for your garden oasis is essential to its success. Start by assessing your outdoor space. Consider factors like sunlight exposure, soil quality, and access to water. Look for a spot with good drainage and adequate space for your plants and features.
Take note of any existing trees, structures, or obstacles that may need to be worked around. For example, if you have a large tree in your yard, you may want to incorporate it into your garden design rather than removing it.
Think about the views from your chosen location. Do you want to create a focal point, such as a statue or pergola, that can be seen from inside your home?
Once you've chosen your location, it's time to assess your space and budget. How much room do you have to work with? What resources do you have available?
Consider the size and shape of your garden space. Do you have a large, open area to work with, or are you dealing with a small, narrow space? Think about how you can make the most of your available space, whether that means incorporating vertical elements like trellises or using containers to grow plants.
Be realistic about your budget and space constraints. Creating a garden oasis can be expensive, but there are ways to keep costs down. Consider using recycled materials, such as old bricks or pallets, to create paths or raised beds. Look for plants that are native to your area, as they will be better adapted to your climate and require less maintenance.
By taking the time to carefully plan your garden oasis, you can create a beautiful and functional outdoor space that you'll enjoy for years to come.
Designing a garden oasis can be a fun and rewarding experience. With the right planning and execution, you can create a beautiful space that reflects your personal style and provides a peaceful retreat from the outside world. In this guide, we'll explore some key elements to consider when designing your garden oasis.
Choosing a theme or style can help give your garden oasis a cohesive look and feel. There are many different styles to choose from, ranging from rustic and cottage-like to modern and minimalistic. When selecting a theme or style, consider your personal preferences and the overall aesthetic of your home. Look for inspiration in magazines, online, or in your neighborhood. For example, if you live in a coastal area, you may want to incorporate beachy elements like seashells and driftwood into your design.
Once you've selected a theme or style, think about how you can incorporate it into your garden design. For example, if you've chosen a cottage-style garden, you may want to include a mix of flowers, herbs, and vegetables in your plantings. You may also want to incorporate rustic elements like wooden benches or trellises into your design.
The layout and flow of your garden oasis will determine how well it functions as a space. When designing your layout, consider elements like walkways, seating areas, and plant placement. Create a focal point that draws the eye and anchors the space. This could be a beautiful tree, a water feature, or a piece of garden art.
Think about how you want people to move through the garden and what areas you want to prioritize. For example, if you plan on using your garden for entertaining, you may want to create a seating area that's separate from your plantings. If you have kids or pets, you may want to create a designated play area that's away from delicate plants.
Water features like fountains, ponds, or waterfalls can add a calming element to your garden oasis. When incorporating a water feature into your design, consider the size and scale of the feature, as well as its placement in the garden. Make sure you have the proper setup for circulation and filtration to keep the water clean and healthy.
Water features can also attract wildlife to your garden, such as birds and butterflies. If you're interested in creating a wildlife-friendly garden, consider incorporating a bird bath or shallow pond into your design.
Seating and relaxation areas are essential to any garden oasis. When adding seating areas to your design, consider incorporating benches, chairs, or hammocks. Look for spots with shade or sun exposure, depending on your preferences. Create spots for reading, meditation, or entertaining guests.
You may also want to consider adding a pergola or other type of shade structure to your garden. This can provide relief from the sun on hot days and create a cosy, intimate atmosphere in your garden.
You can also consider storage for garden soft furnishings such as seat pads or wool throws for the cooler months.
Overall, designing a garden oasis is all about creating a space that reflects your personal style and provides a peaceful retreat from the outside world. With the right planning and execution, you can create a beautiful and functional garden that you'll enjoy for years to come.
Creating a garden oasis is an exciting and rewarding experience. Choosing the right plants is crucial to the success of your garden. Let's explore some tips to help you select the perfect plants for your garden.
Before you start selecting plants, it's important to understand your climate and soil conditions. Different plants thrive in different environments, so research which plants are best suited for your area. Consider factors like soil pH, moisture levels, and sunlight exposure when choosing plants. This will ensure that your plants will thrive and flourish in your specific environment.
When selecting plants, consider their various purposes. Are you looking for plants that provide shade, privacy, or aesthetic appeal? Do you want to attract pollinators or have plants with medicinal properties? Incorporating different species with different functions will add depth and interest to your garden oasis. For example, planting herbs like lavender and rosemary not only add fragrance and beauty to your garden, but they can also be used in cooking and have medicinal properties.
Creating a balanced and diverse plant palette will create a more beautiful and functional garden oasis. Consider plants with different heights, textures, and colours. Mixing foliage and blooms for added interest will give your garden a more dynamic look. Look for species that complement one another and create a cohesive look. For instance, combining tall plants like sunflowers with shorter plants like marigolds can create a beautiful and balanced display.
Flowers and foliage are the most obvious way to add colour and texture to your garden oasis. Look for species that thrive in your area and complement your design. Consider incorporating annuals for seasonal interest and use perennials for long-term pleasure. For example, planting tulips in the spring and chrysanthemums in the fall can provide a burst of colour during those seasons.
By considering your climate and soil conditions, selecting plants for different purposes, creating a balanced and diverse plant palette, and adding colour and texture with flowers and foliage, you can create a beautiful and thriving garden oasis that you can enjoy for years to come.
Creating a beautiful garden oasis requires more than just planting flowers and shrubs. Adding garden features can help create structure, add interest, and make your garden more functional. Here are some ideas for building and installing garden features:
Paths and walkways not only create structure and definition in your garden but also provide a functional way to navigate through your outdoor space. When considering materials for your paths and walkways, think about durability, aesthetics, and maintenance. Stone, pavers, and gravel are popular options that can withstand heavy foot traffic and weather conditions. Also, consider the design of your walkways. Creating curves or angles can direct the eye and connect different areas of your garden, creating a more cohesive space.
Water features and fountains can add a sense of tranquillity and relaxation to your garden oasis. However, installing them requires careful planning and installation. It's best to hire a professional plumber or landscaper to ensure proper setup and maintenance. Additionally, make sure you have the necessary permits and follow local regulations. Once installed, water features and fountains require regular maintenance to keep them looking and functioning their best.
Raised beds and planters are a great way to make gardening more accessible and efficient. They can also add visual interest to your garden. When choosing materials for your raised beds and planters, look for options like cedar, redwood, or composite that are durable and long-lasting. Consider the size and placement of your beds in the garden. You want to make sure they are easily accessible and functional while still being aesthetically pleasing. Look for designs that allow for proper drainage and soil aeration to promote healthy plant growth.
Lighting is not only functional but can also create a magical ambiance in your garden oasis. Consider adding spotlights for trees or features that you want to highlight, or mood lighting for relaxation areas. Look for low-voltage or solar-powered options for energy efficiency and safety. Additionally, lighting can provide safety by illuminating walkways and stairs, making it easier to navigate your garden at night.
Creating a garden oasis can be a labour of love, but the results are worth it. With careful planning and execution, you can transform your outdoor space into a haven of tranquillity and beauty. Remember to choose plants that thrive in your area, create a cohesive design, and prioritize relaxation and enjoyment. Follow these tips, and you'll be well on your way to creating your garden oasis.

The Beginning of Solmate Socks
Solmate Socks was founded in 2000, by Marianne Wakerlin in Vermont. What started as a small business has grown into a family-run enterprise that produces their signature mismatched socks right here in the USA. Marianne's passion for knitting and her desire to create something unique and fun led her to start Solmate Socks. She began by making socks for her friends and family, and soon her designs caught the attention of local boutiques.
As the demand for Solmate Socks grew, Marianne and her husband decided to turn their passion into a full-time business. They started by selling their socks at local craft fairs and festivals. The response was overwhelming, and soon they were shipping their socks all over the country.
Marianne's artistic background is evident in every pair of socks that Solmate produces. From bold stripes to playful polka dots, each design is inspired by the colours and patterns found in nature. The owners of Solmate Socks finds inspiration in everything from the changing leaves of autumn to the vibrant colours of a summer sunset.
The result is a collection of socks that not only brighten up your outfit but also put a smile on your face. Solmate Socks are more than just a fashion statement; they are a celebration of individuality and creativity.
Today, Solmate Socks can be found in select boutiques across the US, Canada, and Europe. Solmate Socks has always been committed to using environmentally friendly materials and production methods.
Despite their growth and success, Solmate Socks remains a small business at heart. The company is still family-owned and operated, and every pair of socks is made with the same care and attention to detail as the first pair Marianne ever created.
As the company continues to grow, they remain committed to their core values of craftsmanship, sustainability, and creativity. Solmate Socks is more than just a business; it's a family, a community, and a celebration of all things colourful and unique.
Solmate Socks are a brand that has taken the world by storm with their unique and unmatched designs. Their socks are not just any ordinary socks, but they are a work of art. The brand has gained a lot of popularity over the years, and it is not just because of their mismatched designs. There are several other features that make Solmate Socks stand out from the rest.
Their signature practice of mismatched designs is one of the most significant features of Solmate Socks. No two socks in a pair are identical, creating a playful and artistic twist on traditional socks. This allows for unique colour combinations in each pair while also ensuring that each sock can be paired with its opposite, maximizing their wearability. The mismatched designs also make it easier to find a pair of socks in the laundry, as you don't have to spend time searching for two identical socks.
Solmate Socks are dedicated to producing sustainable products. They believe in reducing their impact on the environment, and therefore, they use eco-friendly materials in their manufacturing process. Whether you're looking for something to cuddle up with on the sofa or you need an extra layer of cosiness in your bedroom, there's nothing quite like wrapping yourself in a wool throw blanket. Wool blankets are the ultimate in slowing down and being present.
In this article, we'll explore the many benefits of choosing wool throws and blankets over other materials. From their incredible insulation properties to their stylish designs, there are so many reasons why wool is the perfect choice for your home.
We'll also discuss how to choose the right type of wool throw or blanket for your space, as well as tips for caring for and maintaining these cosy pieces.
By the end of this article, you'll understand why wool throws and blankets are essential additions to any home – no matter what style you prefer! So, grab a cup of tea and let's dive into all things warm and woolly.
Wool throws and blankets are the perfect slow living cosy addition to any home. They provide extra warmth and comfort in cold months, while also adding a touch of style to any room. Wool blankets and throws can also be used in warmer months, thanks to the breathability of wool.
When it comes to wool throws and blankets, there are several types of wool fibre available. Most commonly, the wool used for these items is lambswool. Lambswool is the first shearing usually done before the sheep is a year old. This is the softest of all the wools. Our wool throws except for recycled throws, are made from lambswool. All wool is breathable, biodegradable and sustainable.
Merino wool, is known for its softness and warmth. It's also highly breathable, making it a great choice for home decor. Our merino wool throws are made in a historic scottish mill and the wool is sourced from New Zealand. merino lambswool is the softest, most gentle wool there is. The fibres are narrow and bend when they touch the skin. This is what makes the wool so soft.
Gotland Wool is dense and has wavy crimped locks. The wool is soft, silky, and has a high lustre, Gotland wool is also really soft and is perfect for wool blankets. I love the gotland wool throw collection. The colours and patterns are gorgeous. Plus, Gotland wool is a really old wool having been used by the Vikings. Our Gotland wool throws are made from the sheep that live in Sweden.
Merino wool is a lightweight wool with fibers that trap air close to your body. This helps keep you warm without adding extra bulk or weight. Merino wool's natural elasticity makes it perfect for knitting garments or creating cosy blankets and throws. It's also naturally resistant to odor-causing bacteria, so you can stay comfortable even after using it multiple times.
Whichever wool you choose for your blanket or throw, you can rest easy knowing that each offers superior comfort and warmth while still looking stylish in any home setting.
Taking care of your wool throw or blanket is important to keep it looking and feeling great. Here are some tips to help you make sure it stays in tip-top condition.
First, regular airing or shaking helps keep dirt and dust from accumulating on the wool blankets or wool throw. This will also help keep the wool from developing any odors over time. You can also remove any pet hair or other debris that may have gotten stuck in the fibers with a lint roller or brush.
Next, spot cleaning is essential for removing more stubborn stains and spots. It's best to use a mild detergent specifically designed for wool fibres when spot cleaning, as stronger ingredients may damage the delicate fibres.
Always start by testing a small area before doing any larger spot cleanings and avoid using too much water – this can cause the wool to shrink.
When not in use, store your wool throws and blankets away from direct sunlight and heat sources; otherwise, they could fade or become damaged over time.
Additionally, make sure to hang them up rather than folding them for extended periods of time; this will help prevent wrinkles and creases from forming. With proper care and maintenance, your wool throws and blankets will look good for years to come!
The benefits of using wool throws and blankets are numerous. Not only are they incredibly soft and cozy, but they also provide a number of other advantages. One of the most important benefits is its natural insulation properties.
Wool is a naturally insulating material, meaning it can keep you warm even in cold weather. It also helps to regulate body temperature, which is especially beneficial during hot summer months when air conditioning isn't available.
Another advantage of using wool throws and blankets is their durability. Unlike other materials like cotton or synthetic fibres, wool can last for many years without showing signs of wear and tear.
This makes them a great investment, as they will provide warmth and comfort for a long time to come. Furthermore, wool doesn't pill or shed over time like some fabrics do, so it won't lose its shape or look.
Finally, wool throws and blankets are an eco-friendly option due to their renewable source material. Wool comes from sheep that have been raised in humane conditions with minimal environmental impact.
This means that not only are you getting a high-quality product, but one that has been produced responsibly as well. With this in mind, investing in a wool throw can be an ethical choice too.
Weaving is a centuries-old craft that is still used by artisans today. It involves interlocking two sets of threads together to form a fabric. The most common type of weaving is plain weave, which involves alternating warp and weft threads over and under each other. This technique produces a balanced and durable fabric that is often used in making wool throws and blankets.
Jacquard weaving is another popular method for creating textured fabrics. This technique uses computer-controlled jacquard looms to create intricate patterns with the use of multiple harnesses. The patterns are formed through a series of raised wefts, giving them an extra dimension and texture. Jacquard woven throws and blankets are perfect for adding character to any room.
Hand-weaving is also used to create unique pieces with special attention paid to detail. Weavers use hand looms or pit looms to weave intricate patterns out of yarn or thread, resulting in beautiful one-of-a-kind pieces that can't be replicated by machine weaving alone.
Whether you opt for plain weave, jacquard weave, or hand-weaving, you can be sure your throw or blanket will provide many years of comfort and warmth.
The final step in producing a wool throw or blanket is the finishing. This process includes everything from brushing to prevent pilling to adding a decorative trim.
Brushing is important because it not only softens the wool fibers, but it also helps them lie flat and prevents pilling. A variety of other processes, such as shearing, sueding, and steaming, may also be used during this stage to ensure that all creases and wrinkling are removed for a smooth look and feel. Finally, decorative trims like fringes or cords can be added for an extra touch of luxury.
Moving on from finishes, let's take a look at the colours and patterns of wool throws and blankets. They come in a variety of colours and designs, ranging from muted tones to vibrant hues.
You'll find solids, plaids, stripes, floral prints, geometric shapes, and many other patterns. Whether you're looking for something subtle to warm up your living room or bedroom or something bold to make a statement in your entryway or patio area, you're sure to find what you need.
When selecting a patterned blanket or throw, consider how it will work with the overall style of the room. If you're going for an eclectic look, bright colours and unique patterns can bring it together beautifully.
On the other hand, if you want more subdued vibes in a space then neutral tones and subtle patterns may be better suited for that atmosphere.
The beauty of wool throws and blankets is that they provide warmth during cold months while also adding color and texture to any space. They can easily become the focal point of a room or just provide an extra layer of comfort when snuggling up on the couch.
No matter what kind of pattern or colour you choose for your wool blanket or throw, it's sure to be an excellent addition to your home décor.
When looking for a wool throw or blanket, you'll find there are a variety of styles available. From vibrant colors to intricate weaves, there's something to suit every taste.
Eco-Friendly Options
Nowadays, more and more people are looking for eco-friendly options when it comes to textiles. Wool throws and blankets are a great way to make sure your home is both comfortable and environmentally friendly.
Wool is a renewable resource that's biodegradable, meaning it won't contribute to landfill waste or pollute the environment. In addition, wool is naturally fire-resistant, which makes it a safe choice for use in the home or around children.
Wool throws and blankets offer a luxurious feel while also being kind to the planet. They provide warmth in winter and breathability in summer, making them ideal all year round. Plus, they're easy to care for, spot spot-clean with mild detergent when necessary.
With its superior insulation properties and long-lasting durability, wool makes an excellent choice for any bedroom décor – providing comfort without compromising on quality.
When considering the cost of a wool throw or blanket, there are several factors to consider. The quality of the materials used in the product and the craftsmanship that goes into making it are two major factors.
If you’re looking for a high-quality wool throw or blanket, expect to pay more than you would for something made with lower-grade materials.
The size of the item is also an important factor in determining its cost. A large wool throw or blanket may be more expensive than one that is smaller because it will require more material and time to make. Similarly, if you’re looking for a unique pattern or design on your item, this too could affect its price.
No matter what type of wool item you choose, it’s sure to last a long time and provide years of warmth and comfort for years to come. Taking all these factors into account can help you determine which type of wool throw or blanket is right for your budget and needs.
In conclusion, wool throws and blankets are a fantastic choice for adding warmth and comfort to any home. With so many types of fibres, weaving techniques, colours, patterns, and styles available, there is something for everyone in this versatile and eco-friendly material. Plus, with the proper care and maintenance, these cosy items can last for years to come.
The cost of wool throws and blankets can vary widely depending on the type of fibre used and the quality of construction. However, you don't have to break the bank to enjoy the benefits of this natural fiber; there are plenty of affordable options out there that provide excellent value for money.
So, if you're looking for something luxurious yet practical to add a touch of style to your home decor or just want an extra layer of warmth for those chilly winter nights, then why not consider investing in some wool throws or blankets? You won't regret it!

]]>I feel that it is a misnomer that wool blankets and wool throws are only for cold weather.
I often get comments that wool blankets are a seasonal product. Whilst winter and the cooler months is what you associate wool and cosiness with, wool blankets are perfect for using all year round.
I know that may surprise some of you and you may think that the thought of wool on a hot summers’ day is just plain crazy.
Please bear with me. Wool is widely acknowledged to be perfect for keeping you warm and toasty in the cold months. Thanks to the breathability of wool, it can actually keep you cool in the summer and warm weather.
Wool is highly breathable
Wool is one of the most breathable fibres around. This is because the structure of wool fibres means they absorb moisture, which is then wicked away and evaporates into the air. Wool is even more breathable than cotton. Man made fibres are just not breathable at all. They retain heat, make you sweat and you get that horrible hot sweaty feeling. Polyester is just not able to breathe.
Wool helps regulate body temperature
Due to wool's ability to breathe in contrast to synthetics, wool is an active fibre that reacts to changes in body temperature. This means it helps you stay warm when the weather is cold, and cool when the weather is hot. A wool blanket or throw on the bed can help you get a more comfortable night’s sleep on hot summer nights. I have frequently just slept under a merino wool throw and stayed at the perfect temperature.
Wool blankets layered on the bed adds charm and style to your bedroom. Wool blankets also help you to regulate your body temperature sleep more comfortably
Wool is odour resistant
As wool absorbs moisture vapour there will be less sweat on your body. Wool fibres have a natural protective outer layer that also helps prevent stains from being absorbed, plus it generates very little static, so it attracts less dust and lint. Wool blankets generally need to be washed less than other fabrics because they naturally h. resist dirt and odours. A good shake and an air outside on a washing line is often all that’s needed to keep them fresh.
Wool is self-cleaning
I know this is quite a statement, but bear with me. The keratin in wool breaks down bacteria naturally. The core of each wool fibre strand is composed of two types of cells that absorb different amounts of moisture. One type swells more than the other causing a constant motion between the two. This characteristic creates a mechanical, self-cleaning effect.
Most wool blankets are machine washable
Country Mouse sells a wide range of wool throws that are machine washable, so you don’t have to worry when taking your blanket out for a summer picnic, or star gazing.
Wool blankets are perfect for use outdoors in the warmer months. Transform your outdoor space with colour and texture.
Which type of wool is warmest?
All types of wool will keep you warm, and have temperature regulating properties to help you stay cool in hot weather. However, merino wool is my throw of choice for warmer weather. Merino lambswool fibres have a unique crimped structure that create tiny air pockets to trap extra warmth. Country Mouse’s merino wool throws and wool blankets are very soft and warm, while also being lightweight and drapey. This makes merino blankets really versatile in all seasons.

Style your bedroom with wool blankets to make it feel warm and cosy.
For the Warmest wool blanket choose 100% wool
When it comes to choosing the perfect wool blanket for your bedroom, warmth and quality is the key. 100% wool blankets will keep you warm. Man made materials will not. Wool is highly breathable and will keep you at just the right temperature. To stay warm always go for 100% wool.
Which wool blankets are the softest?
The softest wool blankets that we stock are merino lambswool. Merino is an amazing fibre and can even be worn against the skin. Merino is such a clever wool and has incredibly long and narrow fibres.
This makes the wool really soft. Merino wool blankets are also thin and drapey. Don’t be fooled by this lightweight wool blanket. For its weight, it's incredibly warm. Merino lambswool is perfect if you want a lighter-weight blanket in the spring.
Whilst they are warm, our thick wool blankets will give that comforting cosy feeling.

Size Matters
When it comes to size, think about how much of your bed you want your blanket to cover. If you want a decorative blanket or do you want a wool blanket to keep you warm. All of our wool blankets are approximately double bed size. Our Swedish wool blankets are slightly larger than our Merino wool throws. They will cover a double bed and keep you warm and cosy. At the moment Country Mouse doesn’t stock king size wool blankets.
The great thing about wool blankets is that are versatile. Your wool blanket can have more than just one function. You can use it as an extra layer on your bed for helping keep you warm, wrapping up in it for breakfast in bed or reading.
Your wool blanket can also be used on your bedroom chair. I like to wrap up in a wool blanket and sit near a window to read. Plus a wool blanket on a chair just looks like it belongs there and is always ready to give you a cosy woollen hug.
Its nice to add colour and texture to a room. I love a layered maximalist look. Lots of complimenting and contrasting colours and textures. It just makes a cosy snuggly retreat and a place to recharge.
Choosing the colour of your bedroom wool blanket
What I particularly love about wool blankets is the wide variety of colours and patterns that are available. You can add pastel such as pink, sage green, duck egg and mint green for pretty spring summer colours. These are my personal favourite.
You can make a statement with hot fuchsia pink, bright yellows and oranges which will add drama and colour. Adding cool greys and warm neutrals can make a room feel restful.
If you like something different, one of our green blankets will certainly add character to your bedroom, such as the House in the Forest - Green.
Colour can transform the look and feel of your bedroom.
Wool Blankets for a Spring bedroom.
Spring is my favourite time of the year. It is also the prettiest in my opinion. My personal favourite colour for a wool blanket is always pastels, and if I’m being completely honest, its pinks and sage greens. I know that’s not everyone’s favourite which makes the world interesting.
It is well documented that colour can influence mood. Cool colours can soothe, reduce anxiety and create a calm environment. Warm colours can create passion, as well as comfort.
Bring Sping colour into your bedroom by introducing yellow, pink and sage greens.
