What is Merino Wool?

What is Merino Wool?

Merino wool, is wool from the Merino breed of sheep. The vast majority of merino wool is produced in Australia and New Zealand.

Why is Merino wool so soft?

The staples (length of each fibre) in Merino wool are about 65-100mm long. By having a longer fibre, it helps to give Merino wool its softness. It is the softness of Merino wool which makes it suitable to be warm next to your skin.

What are the uses of Merino wool?

Merino wool is used as a technical fibre in sports clothing. Items such as vests can be made from merino wool, partly because of its softness and also because merino wool is very good at wicking moisture away from your body. It can also be used in the home for soft furnishings, wool blankets and throws as well as wool socks.
