How to Choose the Right Wool Throw for Your Home

How to Choose the Right Wool Throw for Your Home

Choosing a wool throw is rarely about ticking boxes. It’s about how something feels in your hands, how it sits on a sofa, and whether it quietly earns its place in everyday life.

At Country Mouse, we’re often asked which wool throw is best. The honest answer is that there isn’t a single “best”; there's just the right wool for how you live, what you value, and the atmosphere you want to create in your home.

This guide is designed to help you understand the character of the wool throws we offer, without overwhelming you with technical detail. Each wool has its own rhythm, its own texture, and its own way of bringing warmth and comfort into a space.

Why the type of wool matters

Not all wool behaves in the same way. The breed of sheep, the length of the fibre, and how the yarn is spun and finished all shape the final feel of a throw.

Some wool throws are softly draped and immediately comforting. Others are more textured, bringing depth and warmth. Understanding these differences makes choosing feel intuitive rather than confusing.

At Country Mouse, we specialise in carefully curated throws woven by Klippan, selected for their quality, longevity, and thoughtful design. We focus on four wool types, each chosen with intention.

Lambswool throws

Soft and versatile, lambswool throws are perfect for any room in your home.

Lambswool is made from the first shearing of a sheep, which gives the fibres a natural softness and elasticity. It’s one of the most versatile wools and forms the foundation of many homes.
How it feels
Soft, comforting, and lightly structured without being heavy.
Where it works best
  • Draped over a sofa or armchair
  • Folded at the end of a bed
  • Used daily without feeling precious
Who it’s for
If you want a throw that feels welcoming and adaptable, something you can reach for every day, lambswool throws are an excellent choice.

Eco lambswool throws

The same softness, with a lighter footprint, eco lambswool throws also include our premium lambswool blankets.

Eco lambswool offers the same look and feel as traditional lambswool but is made with sustainability in mind by colouring fibres at the raw wool stage, reducing water and energy use. Our premium blankets are all woven from eco lambswool.
How it feels
Indistinguishable from standard lambswool: soft, breathable, and comfortable.
Where it works best
  • Conscious homes
  • Minimal interiors
  • Spaces where simplicity and quality matter
Who it’s for
If sustainability is important to you, eco lambswool allows you to choose thoughtfully without compromising on feel or design.

Recycled merino wool throws.

Soft, refined, and beautifully draped
Recycled merino blends recycled fibres with new merino lambswool for strength and a fine texture.
How it feels
Smooth, softly weighted, and elegant with a gentle drape.
Where it works best
  • Modern sofas
  • Bedrooms
  • Colour-led interiors where pattern and tone matter.
Who it’s for
If you’re drawn to colour, pattern, and a more refined finish, recycled merino offers warmth with a lighter, more fluid feel.

Gotland wool throws

Textural, distinctive, and quietly bold, gotland wool throws are naturally beautiful.

Gotland wool is from a rare Swedish breed, known for long, silky fibres and natural sheen, with a texture that feels intentional rather than soft.
How it feels
Slightly coarser than lambswool, with depth and character rather than fluffiness. Our gotland throws have a grey undertone, which is the wool's natural colour.
Where it works best
  • Layered interiors
  • Natural, earthy homes
  • Spaces that benefit from texture and contrast
Who it’s for
If you appreciate materials with personality and presence, a Gotland wool throw brings warmth with visual interest.

Choosing a wool throw based on lifestyle

If you’re uncertain, start by considering your daily routines, household needs, and what you want from a throw beyond appearance.
If you’d prefer a more personal, lifestyle-led approach, you may enjoy our guide: Which wool throw is right for you.
  • For everyday comfort: Lambswool or eco lambswool
  • For a softer drape on a sofa: Recycled merino
  • For texture and visual depth: Gotland wool
  • When choosing a thoughtful, universally appealing gift, lambswool and recycled merino both suit a wide range of tastes and homes.
  • For minimal or Scandinavian-inspired homes: Eco lambswool or Gotland
There’s no wrong choice, only the one that feels right in your space.

Caring for your wool throw

Wool needs little care. It's naturally breathable, dirt-repellent, and odour-resistant.
In most cases, air your wool throw outdoors to refresh it and help maintain its natural properties.
  • For minor marks or spills, use a damp cloth to gently blot the affected area rather than rubbing, which can damage the fibres.
  • Full washing is rarely needed. If a wash is necessary, choose hand-washing in cool water with a gentle wool detergent, then lay flat to dry away from direct heat.
This makes wool throws ideal for slow, intentional living, beautiful, practical, and made to last.
