Which wool blankets are the softest and warmest

Which Wool Throw Is the Softest and Warmest?

If you’re choosing a wool blanket, two questions usually come first:
Which one is the softest?
Which one is the warmest?
It isn’t quite one or the other.
The softest wool doesn’t always feel the warmest, and the warmest doesn’t always feel the softest. It depends on the type of wool and how you want it to feel in your home.
At Country Mouse, I focus on three carefully chosen types:
Each one offers something different. This guide will help you choose the right one with confidence.

What Makes a Wool Blanket Soft or Warm?

Softness comes down to fibre fineness. The finer the fibre, the smoother it feels against the skin.
Warmth works differently. Wool keeps you warm by trapping air, not just by its weight. That’s why even lighter wool can feel surprisingly warm.
All wool shares the same natural qualities:
  • breathable
  • temperature regulating
  • naturally odour resistant
  • easy to care for
But how it feels day-to-day depends on the type of wool you choose.

The Softest Wool Blanket

Lambswool and recycled merino are both soft, but not the same

If softness matters most to you, both lambswool and merino are excellent choices. The difference is in the weight and feel.
Lambswool throws are soft and have more body. They are also slightly thicker, with a cosy and structured feel. These are the throws people tend to reach for when they want something reassuring and warm without feeling heavy.
Recycled merino wool throws.
Softer to the touch and lighter in weight, with more drape. They feel easier, less structured, and work well across seasons.
Both sit firmly in the “soft” category. The choice comes down to preference:
  • more substance and structure → lambswool
  • lighter, softer and more drapey → merino

Our klippan merino wool throws combine merino lambswool and recycled merino, creating an eco-friendly soft wool throw that looks as beautiful as it feels.

The Warmest Wool Blanket

Warmth isn’t just about thickness, but it does influence how a throw feels.
Lambswool throws feel warmer in a traditional sense.
They are thicker and hold their shape, which gives that familiar, cosy warmth on colder evenings.
Recycled merino throws are lighter but still warm. The fine fibres trap heat efficiently without feeling heavy, making them easier to use year-round.

Gotland wool, warm with a more refined feel

Gotland wool sits just alongside these, with its own character.
  • soft, with a gentle sheen
  • slightly weightier than merino
  • smooth rather than fluffy
It feels more polished than lambswool, while still offering real warmth.

Yorkshire Recycled Wool Throws

A more textured, practical warmth

My Yorkshire wool throws are woven from redundant yarn collected from British mills.
They offer something different:
  • warm and durable
  • more textured in feel
  • made in small batches
They are not as smooth as lambswool or merino, and that’s intentional.
These are for homes where practicality, sustainability and craftsmanship matter just as much as softness.
Our Yorkshire recycled wool throws are woven from redundant yarn and have more of a shetland wool quality.

Lambswool vs Merino vs Gotland vs Yorkshire Wool

Lambswool Soft Warm and cosy Slightly thicker, structured Every day use, colder evenings
Recycled Merino Very soft Warm for its weight Light, drapey Year-round use
Gotland Wool Soft with sheen Warm and slightly weighty Smooth, refined Cosy but more elevated feel
Yorkshire Wool Varies Warm and durable Textured, heritage feel Practical, sustainable choice

Which Wool Blanket Should You Choose?

If you’re unsure, this is the simplest way to decide:
  • Choose lambswool if you want something soft, cosy and slightly thicker.
  • Choose recycled merino if you prefer a lighter, softer, more fluid feel.
  • Choose Gotland wool for warmth with a smoother, more refined finish.
  • Choose Yorkshire wool if you value durability, sustainability and a more textured feel.
If it’s your first wool throw, lambswool is often the easiest place to start.

Why Wool Feels Different to Synthetic Blankets

Wool behaves differently from synthetic fibres.
It doesn’t uncomfortably trap heat.
It regulates temperature, keeping you warm without overheating.
It also doesn’t need frequent washing. Most of the time, simply airing your throw is enough.
If you’d like to understand more, you can read our guide on how to care for wool blankets.
The softest wool blanket isn’t always the warmest, and the warmest isn’t always the one you’ll reach for every day.
The right choice comes down to how you want it to feel:
  • light and easy
  • soft and drapey
  • or more substantial and grounded
Once you know that, choosing becomes much easier.
